Technologies are born in the minds of scientists and go through various stages before entering daily use and losing part of their innovative charge. Evaluating where a technology is in its journey before adopting it in the company is fundamental to establishing the investment in terms of money and time.

The index of the maturity level of technology has been developed by NASA with the acronym TRL (Technology Readiness Level). On the other hand, Gartner has outlined a technology maturity model that can serve as a reference for companies.

Here are the steps that indicate the passage from the prototype of Artificial Intelligence to the full use of all its possible applications:

  • Level 1 — awareness of the technology: this is the stage when scientists showed interest in the brand new technology and started talking about it at conferences and industry meetings. In fact, it was during a conference at Dartmouth College in the ’50s that John McCarthy coined the term Artificial Intelligence.
  • Level 2 — the experimental activation of AI: from the scientific community’s general interest, we moved to prototype studies in universities, and the first investments in research and development began. We are in the 60s/70s, and the acceleration followed the development of computers.
  • Level 3 — operation of AI to innovate processes or products: the entry of AI in production is making industries smart or ready to improve processes and products by associating automation with cognitive algorithms.
  • Level 4 — a systemic approach and the creation of new business models: today, AI is not yet in this stage of maturity, but we are starting to see the first approaches. At this level, new business models are created to optimize and make AI adoption efficient. Improvement, in fact, no longer involves a single department but spreads throughout the entire business reality.
  • Level 5 — future of Artificial Intelligence: what will be the future developments of AI? Read the full article on DeltalogiX blog.
