Digital Twin: how to accelerate in-house development and analysis

Have you already heard about Digital Twin? In a nutshell, we can say that it’s a virtual copy of any existing and connected physical object. Not only. In the company, it can also simulate an entire physical asset.

Real-time information retrieval takes place through connected sensors positioned at critical points of the object to be simulated. The extracted data passes to a processing system and it is transformed into action on the virtual model.

The role of the digital twin is to show what might happen when certain conditions occur. In reality, every change generates more or less pleasant consequences. Instead, when I can virtually simulate a process, I will be able to see which could be the outcomes without compromising anything. If the results don’t satisfy me, I can modify them by acting on the software. In this way, time is reduced, but above all, the risks are reduced.

Here are three elements that distinguish Digital Twin from CAD software:

  1. The passage of information. In CAD, the represented object doesn’t exist yet. Therefore, simulations made online do not pass to the actual device and vice versa. With Digital Twin, on the other hand, communication is bidirectional, and interaction with the physical object is constant and simultaneous.
  2. The contribution of simulation. The virtual simulation of an object shows how it could be and what it could do. The virtual twin, on the other hand, is specific and real. Therefore, the designer can make changes based on the actual use of the object.
  3. The use phase. Designers use a prototype made in CAD to test different scenarios useful in designing the object. On the other hand, the virtual twin not only acts in the design phase but it serves to improve all phases of a product’s life cycle.

What can be the current and future applications of the Digital Twin? The answer is in the full article on the DeltalogiX blog. Enjoy!
