Edge Computing: how to reduce data latency

What is Edge Computing, and why does it offer a greater benefit to manufacturing entities? Edge Computing is a distributed architecture that allows to manage information locally. The logic of operation is similar to that of the cloud; but the data does not arrive directly at a Data Center, it is processed by a local device, computer, or server.

This procedure allows a reduction in latency times because the process takes place close to the device that generated the raw data.

In which context does Edge Computing make a difference? In modern factories operating in an IoT (Internet of Things) environment. When a factory is equipped with connected machinery, if we don’t process the data quickly, it becomes obsolete, and the effectiveness of the network is drastically reduced.

This is because the information gathered by the machinery on an assembly line has a dual function:

  • one part serves to improve the process, and so the data will need to be processed in real-time and fed back into the process;
  • one part serves to guide strategic choices, and therefore the raw data must be read and processed by dedicated resources.

In the first case, Edge Computing allows to reduce latency times and speed up response actions. In the second case, the resources will have a significantly reduced amount of data to reprocess.

Here’s an infographic that illustrates the steps that make up an Edge Computing architecture.

The various layers indicate the data transitions from the local network up to the business executives. It goes from the local network that allows the connection between physical devices to Edge Computing with decentralized applications. Finally, the data arrives in the hands of the top management to improve strategic decisions.
