How does the IoT speed up the work of the project manager?

The Internet of Things offers the possibility to connect to the network everyday objects, such as smartphones and household appliances, but also industrial machinery and cameras for monitoring construction sites. The benefits in the industrial world mainly affect the construction and manufacturing industries that, thanks to IoT, have increased the volume of data useful for process analysis and predictive maintenance.

The IoT also offers numerous advantages to Project Managers who, through connected objects, will be able to obtain information in real-time and have control over the entire project but also the individual steps of progress.

Here’s how project efficiency improves when a PM relies on IoT technologies:

  1. Complete process control: if the project involves the efficiency of a production chain, installing sensors on the machinery present on the production line will allow the PM to obtain real-time data on the production progress. With the numerical knowledge of the entire process, it will make much more accurate forecasts.
  2. Real-time data: reducing the latency of a piece of data is fundamental to process that information when it is still “hot” or rather when there is time to change course or repair damage. In this way, we will drastically reduce waste, sudden machine stops, and downtime.
  3. In-depth data analysis: in a project leveraging IoT technologies, we would have a huge amount of data coming from all the connected sensors. If we build a virtual information flow, we could analyze all the relevant points of a project and their interconnection. We will have general information but also the possibility to go into detail.
  4. Rapid reporting: PMs will be able to create summary dashboards that collect data and show results from the various departments involved.
  5. Monitoring of relevant data: by defining which KPIs are to be monitored, it is possible, by activating specific alerts, to receive an instant warning when anomalies or deviations from the set parameters occur.
