Smart City and sustainability: what will the cities of the future be like?

When I imagine a futuristic city, I think about solving all those problems that stress the metropolis. I imagine a traffic-free Smart City, with public transportation conveniently taking you to work, homes and buildings leveraging automation to reduce consumption while improving efficiency, but also self-driving cars that communicate with each other and traffic lights that are activated when necessary.

All this is already technologically possible, but transforming a metropolis into a Smart City is not a simple process. There are pilot projects involving cities that are already technologically advanced and aim not only to improve city life but also at sustainability.

Some examples?

  • The Smart Nation of Singapore: a city-state that focuses on urban development, innovation, and sustainability. The project aims to create a digital society that uses technology to improve health services, transportation, and urban life. The implementation push comes from the Singapore government with a $43.5 billion plan to invest over the next ten years in sustainable infrastructures, such as subways and light rail.
  • The Copenaghen Solutions Lab: a true open-air experimental laboratory that focuses on communication and digital services. The planned objectives concern the improvement of services and access modes. The support, in this case, comes from technologies that allow the digitalization of processes and the proper communication of their operation to citizens and tourists.
  • The Innovation District of Boston: a project that starts from the redevelopment of a seaport. Already a transition point, the port has been transformed into an innovative district that welcomes brilliant minds and entrepreneurs. A place where proximity helps produce disruptive ideas and challenges, such as Vision Zero, a project that uses sensors and cameras to reduce traffic accidents.

What will be the future challenges of Smart Cities, and how will they impact environmental sustainability? The answer is in the full article on the DeltalogiX blog.
